How to Validate

Local Validation (Kind)

bash
# Create Kind cluster
kind create cluster --name handoff-lab

# Deploy monitoring stack
cd labs/08-handoff-runbooks
./scripts/setup-monitoring.sh

# Verify deployment
kubectl get pods -n monitoring
kubectl get svc -n monitoring

# Import dashboards
./scripts/import-dashboards.sh

# Access Grafana
kubectl port-forward -n monitoring svc/prometheus-grafana 3000:80
# Open http://localhost:3000 (admin/prom-operator)

# Verify dashboards
# Check that dashboards are visible and have data

Cloud Validation (GKE)

bash
# Deploy to existing GKE cluster
cd labs/08-handoff-runbooks
./scripts/setup-monitoring.sh

# Verify deployment
kubectl get pods -n monitoring
kubectl get svc -n monitoring

# Import dashboards
./scripts/import-dashboards.sh

# Access Grafana (via Ingress or port-forward)
kubectl port-forward -n monitoring svc/prometheus-grafana 3000:80

Runbook Validation

bash
# Test each runbook
# 1. Follow procedures step-by-step
# 2. Verify all commands work
# 3. Check verification steps
# 4. Test rollback procedures
# 5. Update based on findings

# Example: Test deployment runbook
# Follow deployment-runbook.md procedures
# Verify deployment works
# Test rollback

Training Material Validation

bash
# Review training materials
# 1. Review training agenda
# 2. Test hands-on exercises
# 3. Verify certification checklist
# 4. Ensure materials are complete

# Example: Test hands-on exercise
# Follow hands-on-exercises.md
# Verify all exercises work
# Check prerequisites

Notes

Partial Validation

Some components require customer-specific configuration:

  • Alert notification channels
  • Custom dashboards
  • Application-specific runbooks
  • Customer-specific training materials

These are provided as templates and should be customized for each customer.

Testing Recommendations

Before Handoff:

  • Test all runbooks in staging
  • Verify all monitoring works
  • Test all training exercises
  • Review all documentation
  • Conduct practice handoff

After Handoff:

  • Monitor customer success
  • Collect feedback
  • Update based on learnings
  • Improve continuously

Remember: Validation is not just about technical correctness—it's about ensuring customer empowerment and success.
